What is a Laboratory Freeze Dryer?
In cutting-edge fields such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, materials science, and food engineering, a key challenge for researchers and engineers is achieving long-term stable storage and convenient transportation of samples without damaging their microstructure and biological activity. AGICO, a leading manufacturer of precision laboratory instruments, understands this need deeply. Our FD Series Laboratory Freeze Dryers integrate cutting-edge technology, refined craftsmanship, and intelligent control. Characterized by precision engineering, user-friendly operation, and strong flexibility, they are widely used in medical, pharmaceutical, bioproducts research, chemistry, food & fruit/vegetable processing, nanomaterials, and many other fields, serving as the ideal choice for teaching and research in universities and scientific laboratories. We offer multiple specifications and configurations to meet the routine freeze-drying requirements of most laboratories, providing you with precise, efficient, and reliable lyophilization solutions from basic research to pilot-scale amplification.

A laboratory freeze dryer, scientifically known as a lyophilizer, is a precision instrument that removes water (or other solvents) from samples through the principle of sublimation. The process involves three core steps: first, rapidly freezing the sample below its eutectic point, solidifying the water into ice; then, providing precise heat to the sample under a vacuum environment, causing the ice to sublimate directly into water vapor; finally, capturing and re-condensing the water vapor onto a lower-temperature condenser (cold trap), thus obtaining a dry, porous product.
Parts of a Laboratory Freeze Dryer
Structure of lab freeze dryer
Each AGICO lab freeze dryer is a precision-engineered system, where key components work together to ensure reliable performance:
Drying Chamber
Made of high-grade 304 or 316L stainless steel for easy cleaning and corrosion resistance. The transparent door allows process observation, and its sealed design ensures high vacuum integrity.
Vacuum System
Uses a high-performance vacuum pump to quickly achieve and maintain a strong vacuum (< 10 Pa). An integrated vacuum gauge provides real-time monitoring for precise control.
Cold Trap
Acts as the unit's "heart." Its efficient coil design reaches temperatures as low as -80°C, ensuring high ice condensation capacity for efficient drying and pump protection.
Temperature-Controlled Shelves
Available in standard or heated versions. The heated shelves provide precise, uniform temperature control from -50°C to +70°C, with programmable heating profiles for complex drying processes.
Control System
Features a user-friendly touchscreen interface to monitor all key parameters in real-time. Users can save and run up to 50 programs for fully automated, unattended operation.
Types of AGICO Laboratory Freeze Dryer
To meet the stringent requirements of different material characteristics and experimental workflows, AGICO Laboratory Freeze Dryers offer various functional models, achieving a high degree of customization:
- Ordinary Type: Material is bulk-loaded into material trays. Suitable for freeze-drying substances like foods, Chinese herbal medicine, and powder materials that do not require stringent sealing.
- Manifold with Stoppering Type: Designed specifically for materials loaded in vials. The vial stoppers are placed loosely before drying. After drying is complete, the built-in mechanism presses the stoppers tight under vacuum, effectively preventing secondary contamination and re-absorption of moisture, facilitating the long-term preservation of pharmaceuticals, microbial strains, etc.
- Manifold Type (Standard): Flasks are attached externally to the drying chamber for drying material shell-frozen on the inner flask walls. Via the manifold valve system, flasks can be attached or detached as needed without stopping the process, significantly improving efficiency for handling small batches or multiple sample types.
- Manifold Type (T-type): Designed for ampoules, suitable for the long-term preservation of microbial strains like bacteria and fungi. Samples are sealed within small ampoules under vacuum or inert gas atmosphere after lyophilization, offering advantages like long preservation periods and low mutation rates.
- Manifold with Stoppering Type: Combines the features of both the Stoppering Type and the Manifold Type, offering multiple functionalities in one unit with extreme flexibility.
- In-situ Type: The material can complete the entire process from pre-freezing to drying within the drying chamber, eliminating the need for transfer mid-process. This maximizes operational simplicity and prevents contamination, making it ideal for high-end pharmaceutical and biological research.
