What is orange oil?

Orange is very common fruits in China, we all know its pulpa is rich in vitamin C and it tastes good. What’s more, processing orange into orange juice is also very delicious, but do you know the by-products of orange are the same useful, such as orange oil coming from the orange peel. Orange oil is also called orange essential oil. It is produced by extruding the orange peel. When you have peeled an orange, have you ever noticed tiny droplets spray from the peel (not the fruit segments) and noticed a burst of orange aroma at the same time? What you noticed is the essential oil that lives in the rind escaping as you peel the fruit. Next time when you peel an orange (or other citrus fruit), try pressing a portion of the rind between your fingers, and you should be able to smell the intense aroma of the essential oil escaping the rind. And the tiny droplets which can be extracted by professional orange essential oil extractor are just the exact by-products that we want to get. Generally, the color of orange oil is yellow, reddish yellow, orange, or yellowish-brown.

Composition of orange oil

We all know that citronellal, geranial, limonene, linalool, and neral are the main chemical components of orange. But a-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, limonene, linalool, citronellal, decanal, neral and geranial are the main chemical components of orange oil. Among all these components, D-limonene is the most common and occupies most of the components, nearly more than 90%, and it’s easy to be extracted from the rind of orange. But other components of orange oil are different due to the different extraction, different region and different season.  

Orange oil benefits and applications

As a natural biologics with the characters of cheap, fine and different properties, orange oil is extensively used in many different fields, such as chemical, aromatherapy, cosmetic industry, agriculture, etc. What’s more, as a newly developed environmental protection material, orange essential oil is also applied in environment.

Application of chemical engineering industry.
Orange oil can take place of many poisonous solvents. One side, orange oil can take place of xylene, then is used to compound resinae products, such as alcohol acids, polyester and amino pybidilazo, etc. In addition, orange oil can be as the thinner or additive of kinds of painting which can greatly reduce the poisonous and harmful substance of the chemical products in order to conform to the environment requirements. On the other hand, orange oil also can take place of trichloroethane which has serious damage to ozone sphere. As the main component of orange oil, limonene is the main raw material of cleanser not only for the industry but also for the household just with different concentration. And the industry cleanser can clean most of the blots of road and bridge concrete, printing ink blot of printing machinery and so on. The household cleanser with low concentration limonene can be used in the restaurant, inn and home for cleaning kitchen ware, dinnerware, tea set, vegetable, fruits and clothes, etc.

Application of medical and health care industry.
Orange oil is extensively utilized in medical and health care industry because it is verified to cure many ailments, such as mouth ulcers, lowering blood pressure and soothing nerves. Orange oil can cure body inflammation, help to eliminate toxins in the body and deal well with digestive problems. And research indicates that orange oil can be made into capsule or solvent and have the functions of regulating qi-flowing for eliminating phlegm, spleen and stomach, stopping pain and expelling of toxin.

Application of cosmetic industry.
More and more people want to use the products which produce added orange oil. When used externally, the cosmetic with orange oil can maintain a youthful appearance. What’ more, orange oil can be used in aromatherapy which can make people happy and relax.

Application of agriculture.
Orange oil can be used as biological insecticides because of the functions of killing insects and eliminating germs. This “biopesticide” is widely used to produce grain, cotton, fruits, vegetable and so on, not only with the property of low cost but also have good effect. So the use of orange oil in organic farming is becoming increasingly important.

Application of food industry.
Orange oil is quite ideal to be used as an added flavoring and natural perfume to beverages, chocolates, biscuits, milk powder, confectionery, and baked goods.
